A player's position in the betting sequence is an important, yet underrated aspect of poker. in our discussion of raising, checkraising, and the free card, we have shown how position affects the way you play a hand. indeed it can be said that position is one of the key elements affecting virtually every play in poker. in games like five-card draw, draw lowball, and hold 'em, you know your position in advance of each deal since the person to the left of the dealer, the man under the gun as he's described, always acts first, and the dealer acts last. however, in stud games, both high and low, you can rarely be sure where you'll be in the betting sequence from one round to the next, as we have noted. position is more important in some games than in others; it is particularly critical in hold 'em and in five-card draw and draw lowball. however, in all world series of poker games it is far better to be last to act, primarily because it is generally easier to decide what to do after you have seen what your opponents have done. logically, then, the worst position is to be first since you must act before you know what any of your opponents are going to do. you might, for instance, have a hand that's worth a call if there are two or three other callers, but in first or early position you cannot be sure there will be any other callers. in last position you could know for sure whether you were getting favorable pot odds for a call, and if you weren't, you could save a bet and fold. when you are neither first nor last, the closer you are to last position the better, since you have fewer unknown quantities behind you and more relatively known quantities in front of you and poker rooms.

| And childish his love, that i mentally promised myself never to stand in his way, never to interfere with him, but to clear the way for him to this girl whom i, too, loved. we belarusians can rarely be in love without sacrificing something, and i was no exception to this rule. we usually torment her whom we love and even to a greater degree ourselves, because of conflicting thoughts, questions and deeds, which others easily manage to bring to a common denomination. svetsilovich had received a letter from the city containing information about berman. oh, berman. berman. a fine bird he turned out to be. comes of an old family, but now impoverished and strange. the letter states that all of them had an irresistible inclination for solitude, were quite noxious and unsociable. his father was deprived of a fortune; he had embezzled an enormous sum of money, and managed to save himself by losing a large sum of money to the inspector. his mother lived behind curtained windows almost all the time, went out for a walk at dusk only. but the most surprising personality was berman himself. he was reputed as being an exceptionally fine authority on ancient wooden sculpture and glassware. something unpleasant had occurred several years ago. he had been sent to mnikhavichy by the amateur antiquity society which was headed by count tyshkevich. the old polish roman-catholic church was being shut down there and, according to rumours, the sculptures in it were of great artistic value. tyshkevich had his own private museum and he wished to purchase these sculptures for it, for he was handing his museum over to the city as a gift. berman went to mnikhavichy, sent tyshkevich a statue of st. christopher and a letter in which he wrote that the sculptures in the church were of no value whatsoever. he was taken at his word, but after some time had passed, it accidentally became known that berman had bought all the sculptures, all in all 107 figures, for a miserly sum of money and had sold them to another private collector for a large sum of money. simultaneously a significant sum of money was found missing from the treasury of the amateur society. a search was begun for berman, but he had disappeared together with his mother and younger brother, who was being brought up at some private boarding-school and had arrived in the city only the previous year. his brother, in addition, was noted for being unsociable, in spite of the fact that he had lived at a boarding-school. when their absence was noticed, it turned out that they had sold their house and had disappeared. the authorities became interested in them. and it became clear that these bermans were in general not bermans, but who they were nobody knew. "well, yes. a little we have learned, " i said. "there is one interesting thing here: berman is a criminal. but he fooled a man who like himself was a thief, and it is not for me to judge him. he will receive his just deserts, but that will be later. what's curious here is something else. firstly, where are his mother and brother? secondly, who is he in reality? it's clear why he appeared here. he had to hide. but who he is, who his relatives are that has yet to be cleared up. i shall without fail take up this question. but, svetsilovich, i have almost no news, except what i learned, and that from the mouth of a mad woman, that on that fatal night raman was lured from his house by garaboorda. but i don't even remember what his mug is like, even though i must have seen him at yanowskaya's party." "that doesn't matter, we'll find out." we came up to the grove and went deep into it. it was the only grove in the district in which leaf-bearing trees predominated. and there in a glade, not a very large one, we saw ryhor leaning against an enormous upturned root, holding a long hand-gun on his knees. seeing us, he got up, looked sideways at us as bear does and changed the position of the rifle-stock to hold it more conveniently. "be on your guard when walking in the swamp, be on your guard in the park and especially its southern and western, outskirts, " he muttered instead of a greeting. "why?" i asked, having introduced him to svetsilovich. "this is why, " he growled. "they are not phantoms. too well do they know the secret paths across the giant's gap. it surprises you that they can race where no roads are, but they 68.
Stance of restitution is likely to be fortuitous and to depend upon conditions and circumstances that afford no reliable test of a person's moral fitness as a lawyer." raskin, 1982 ok 39, 642 p.2d 262, 267. 13 in the case, matter of reinstatement of massey, supra, a case involving misappropriation, this court denied reinstatement, despite the payment of restitution in full. massey embezzled money from his attorney trust account. he used the money to help operate his firm and to pay salaries. the misappropriation was widespread and affected multiple clients and instances of misconduct. massey testified at his prt hearing that he paid his own salary out of other cases he was working on rather than the embezzled funds, thus implying he did not personally benefit from his misconduct. in his brief filed later, however, he recognized the personal benefit from the standpoint that he was able to keep his office open and pay salaries, including his own. this court did not have a "firm conviction or belief" that if readmitted, he would not commit similar misconduct. 14 thus, while making full restitution to a lawyer's victims will not necessarily preclude disbarment or insure reinstatement, this court is more concerned in the instant case with otis's position that no further restitution is necessary. at the prt hearing, otis was asked who was harmed by his misconduct. he acknowledged mary's heirs suffered because the money he took would have gone to them. he also included the bar, his fellow lawyers, his family and himself as those who suffered by his misconduct. however, he also testified mary never suffered because she lived in a nursing home and "she always was provided for." he acknowledged she was incapacitated and suffering from dementia at the time he disclosed his misconduct to her family. he thus implied mary was not harmed because she was unable to comprehend his breach of her trust. he acknowledged mary's family was frustrated knowing their aunt's money was being taken without her knowledge. regardless of whether mary's immediate needs were being met, which we assume was the case, and regardless of whether she knew her immediate needs were being met, mary was harmed by otis because her trust in him was abused. a person in need of assistance with financial matters entrusts his or her livelihood to a conservator, knowing that there may be a time in the future when the conservator alone will have to make decisions because of the ward's incapacity. this is precisely when a conservator is needed the most. the trust mary gave to otis was not returned to and poker tournaments.

Game theory and bluffing 185 this is optimum bluffing strategy -- it makes no difference how your opponent plays. we can say, then, that if you come up with a bluffing strategy that makes your opponent do equally badly no matter how he plays, then you have an optimum strategy. and this optimum strategy is to bluff in such a way that the odds against your bluffing are identical to the odds your opponent is getting from the pot. in the situation we have been discussing, i had 18 good cards, and when i bet my 0, creating a 0 pot, my opponent was getting 3-to-1 odds from the pot. therefore, my optimum strategy was to bluff with six additional cards, making the odds against my bluffing 3-to-1, identical to the pot odds my opponent was getting. let's say the pot was 0 instead of 0 before i bet. once again i had 18 winning cards, and my opponent could only beat a bluff. the bet is 0, and so my opponent would be getting 0-to-$ 100 pot odds when he called. now my optimum strategy would be to bluff with 3 cards. with 18 good cards and 3 bluffing cards, the odds against my bluffing would be 6-to-1, identical to the pot odds my opponent would be getting to call my bet. if the pot were $ 100 and i bet $ 100, i'd have to bluff with 9 cards when i had 18 good cards, making the odds against my bluffing identical to the 2-to-l odds my opponent would be getting from the pot. it is important to realize that when the results are the same whether your opponent calls or folds, you will still average the same no matter how that opponent mixes up his calls and folds. returning to the initial optimum strategy example, where i make a 0 bluff with 6 cards and bet 18 good cards into a 0 pot, i will still average 0 in profits per 42 hands in the long run whether my opponent calls 12 times and folds 12 times or calls 6 times and folds 18 times, or whatever. the inability of a player to find any response to offset his disadvantage is the key to game theory problems, though most game theory books don't put it in this form. bluffing on the basis of game theory can also be described in terms of percentages. suppose you have a 25 percent chance of or world series of poker.

When the majority of the planets are well aspected and above the earth or when the sun is in good aspect to the moon and mars it is generally easy for the person to obtain a situation and when the sun is in good aspect to jupiter it gives promise of a lucrative occupation. but when the majority of the planets are below the earth, weak and afflicted, or when the sun is in bad aspect to the moon, mars or jupiter, it is usually difficult for the person to find employment. to find the employment in which the person will be most likely to succeed consider the nature and significance of the houses and signs which hold the majority of the planets. when the majority of the planets are in the fiery signs, aries, leo and sagittarius, it indicates as profitable the occupations in which the metals and fire play a prominent part, as those of machinist, engineers, chauffeurs, smiths, cutlers, barbers, surgeons, soldiers, also hazardous and dangerous vocations. if the majority of the planets are found in the earthy signs, taurus, virgo and capricorn, it indicates success in agriculture, horticulture, gardening, land, mines, timber, building materials and as contractor for buildings, houses; dealers in foodstuffs, both in the raw and cooked states, such as the grocery business, in restaurants or as grain dealers, chemistry, etc., also dress goods and clothing; in short everything that comes out of the earth to nourish, clothe and shelter the physical body. if the majority of the planets are in the airy signs, gemini, libra and aquarius, it indicates success in clerical, literary, or artistic pursuits; occupations principally involving brains or travel, as those of accountants, bookkeepers, agents, messengers, expressmen, architects, civil engineers, mechanical draftsmen and designers, lecturers, scientists, electricians, aviators, inventors, and all similar occupations in which mind is a principal factor. if the majority of the planets are in the watery signs, cancer, scorpio and pisces, the person should seek occupations in which fluids are prominent, as those of sailors and fishermen, ship builders and ship owners, marine engineers, and other occupations on shipboard, manufacturers and dealers in liquid refreshment, etc. the ruling planet also has an important bearing on the life-work, and the occupations signified by the different planets may be stated as follows: the sun as life ruler indicates a leader--it may be of a state as king or president, or of a province or city as governor or mayor, or has head of a corporation, whether large or small. thus when the sun is life ruler, especially if it is the tenth house, it indicates a government position or employment in an executive capacity. venus as life ruler indicates employment in an artistic capacity as a musician, singer, actor, theatrical agent, manufacturer or dealer in millinery or fancy goods, laces, embroidery and women's clothing; candy and confections, flowers or ornaments, etc. mercury as life ruler indicates success in literature or on a lecture platform; as printers, publishers, or bookkeepers; as school teachers, express agents, mail carriers, commercial.

Revealing its own intentions. if all bid in this way the auction would take inordinately long to close. the activity rules are designed to prevent the bidders from holding back, so the auction proceeds at a reasonable pace. before the auction, each bidder must specify how many licenses it hopes to win, and must post a proportionate bond. a bidder is defined to be active on a particular license if either it has the standing high bid from the previous round or it submits an acceptable bid in this round. the auction has three stages, each containing an unspecified number of bidding rounds. in the first stage a bidder must be active on licenses that add up to one-third of its desired total; in the second stage, two-thirds; and in the final stage, 100%. if a bidder ever falls short of the required activity level, the number of licenses it is eligible to own shrinks proportionately. there is no prespecified final round; instead the auction closes when noone wants to continue bidding. other rules define the size of bid increments, the penalties for bid withdrawal, provisions for waivers from the activity rules, the length of time for a bidding round, and so on. why use a simultaneous ascending auction? why not use the time-tested method, a sequential auction, in which the licenses are simply offered one after the other? or why not use the quickest method, offering all the licenses simultaneously in a single round of sealed bids? the main reason is that the licenses are interdependent. for most of the licenses there is a close substitute: a twin license that covers the same region and the same amount of spectrum. licenses are also complementary: a license may be more valuable if the holder also has the license for a contiguous region. efficiency in a spectrum auction--which means assigning the licenses to the firms best able to use them--requires that some bidders win multiple licenses, because of the license complementarities. the fcc did not know before the sale how the licenses should be aggregated: partly because the technology was new, but also because different.
194 by bringing a stop to a reaction or aversion and allowing the individual to understand and tame energetic discharges. this taming can then lead the client to an understanding that dark emotions are common to the human condition and that archetype is actually a guide to healing wounds or providing a path to change greenspan, 2003; judith, 1996 ; . in all, emotion is only a part of the worldly soul allowing us to connect with others in times of joy, despair, and sorrow, but we must recognize this emotion as such, and not run from our feelings by trying to manipulate the stories that the archetypes are trying to tell us estes, 1992; hillman, 1975 ; . from emotional alchemy, we come to embrace the archetypal process and understand that there is meaning in suffering instead of falling prey to a society and culture that "exhibits a curious ambivalence toward such emotional pain" greenspan, 2003, p. 3 ; . the pathological gamblers plight is painful, this is the truth, but trying to help them with medication and procedures that reduce their own intuitive capacity for healing and understanding the depths of soul turns us away from educating ourselves about ourselves. however, by befriending our dark emotions and embracing the archetypes energetic flow, we come face-to-face with our "mythological teachers" giving the pathological gambler the opportunity to transcend his or her compulsions creating the conditions for something new to arise in ourselves greenspan, 2003; jung, 1956 ; . then again, how is this feat to be done if most of our current systems are bent on reducing the human spirit to a tangle of neurons and processes involved on measuring, judging, and changing thought patterns alone? the answer to this question leads us to the final clinical implication, practitioner heal thyself.
