To the editor: how would you feel if you ran out of gas on the way to work and forty-five minutes later, your vehicle is missing and in a span of 24 hours it ends up costing you 5 to get it back? this is what happened to me. on the morning of dec. 8, 2005, i ran out of gas on airport blvd. on my way to work at friedman brothers. the street is posted no parking on either side, therefore i pulled off at the only available spot in the road, which just happens to be a construction site where the new motel is going. i left my vehicle at exactly 9: 25 a.m. there was no one working at the site at this time. i clocked into work at 9: 30 a.m. as soon as i got settled in i called my insurance to send a tow truck with some gasoline approx. 10 a.m. ; . i informed them i was at work, please call me when they were there so i could come over and sign the necessary paperwork. at 10: 20 they called me and said they couldn't find my vehicle. i walked over to where i left my truck and they were there, but my truck wasn't. i asked them if i needed to sign anything and they said no, because they hadn't done anything. i then spent my lunch hour finding where my truck had been towed to. i finally located it at tri-county tow services. they said the towing fee was 5. i told them i didn't get off work until 6 p.m. they said that was fine i could pick it up then just call the number on the fence and they would come to the office. i arrived there at 6: 30 p.m. with 0 and a can of gasoline. i had my son drop me off and away he went. we entered the office and they started filling out the paperwork. when it was completed they said they needed 0. what? i told them of course ; that i didn't have that much and they offered to drive me to an atm. well my atm doesn't have that much left in it either. i then proceeded to walk home. i live across from the airport. yes, i could have called someone but i felt i needed a cooling off period so away i went at 7: 30 p.m. and yes, it was cold and dark. the next day i walked to work and guess what, the area where i had parked my truck was completely blocked off with cement and cones and there were people at work at 8 a.m. it was explained to me by the police officer that i had been towed for blocking a driveway that they needed. by the way, there is another driveway into the property at the north end of the site, which is the one they were using on friday morning. it is on record that the police were called at 9: 42 a.m. the day before and the tow truck showed up at 10 a.m. later friday afternoon i called the tow company to tell them i would be there on my lunch hour at 1 p.m. i then asked them how much it would be, just to make sure i had enough money and they said it would be 5. i borrowed the money and went to retrieve my truck. i tried to issue a complaint with the police department for this robbery but they said there was nothing they could do but they would take note of the company that they contracted with tri-county towing ; and if they would continue to use them. i tried to find out who owned the property and employed the man who had called in to have my car towed, to no avail. on saturday morning when i went to work the concrete in the driveway was removed and the cones were put in their place and, what do you know, they were working at 8 a.m. this whole thing started because one man claimed i was costing his company thousands of dollars by blocking the driveway as if that big equipment couldn't get around my vehicle or use the other driveway entrance ; . it seems in reality i saved that man's company thousands of dollars because for days following this incident everyone showed up to work much earlier. thus the reason for this letter. that whole incident ruined christmas for me. i couldn't afford to buy anything for anyone. i'm still in debt for the extra money i had to borrow to retrieve my truck. i feel the company working at the site acted a little too hasty, perhaps over the guilt of arriving to work late? it's taken me this long to speak about this incident without being angry, frustrated, and my eyes watering. please reimburse me for my expense. maybe in the long run, i actually saved you money. i did learn one thing; if my vehicle ever goes down again be sure to leave a number to be contacted at, on the note. just saying "out of gas, be right back - cindy" is not enough. the police do not feel that is adequate and neither did the construction company. cynthia jeremiah ukiah.
