Chapter 8. aggressive signals as ritualized intention movements 140 the time its opponent will be weak, in which case the animal does not want to be the first to flee because simply waiting around for the competitor to depart will mean winning the resource. the balance between these two impulses means that the evolved strategy of weak animals is to make a neutral first move, most of the time. however, this neutral move has not been selected for because of its value as a signal of weakness. any information that the opponent can glean from this move constitutes exploitation in the sense outlined in section 3.3, just as a particularly perceptive mantis shrimp that noticed signs of recent moulting in its opponent would be exploiting that opponent and not receiving a signal from it. a poker craps analogy may be useful here: the way a player bets may give you information about the strength of their hand, especially if that player is less than perfectly rational. but it is not the function of betting behaviour to give away this information; the function of betting is of course to win money. betting is not communicating. we should also remember that even though animals are giving away information by making movements that are indicative of their strength, observing one's opponent's first move does not give definite knowledge as to the opponent's fighting ability. even in the dfa case, sometimes a strong animal would make a neutral or even a retreating first move, and sometimes a weak animal would start with an aggressive move. therefore some uncertainty about the opponent's rhp would always remain. the only way to probe an opponent and find out for sure how strong they were would have been to escalate at all times, but it was clearly not worthwhile for even the strongest animals to challenge every possible bluff--they would have been engaged in a prohibitively expensive number of escalated fights. moreover, even in the dfa case, the information gained by observing strength-typical moves cannot have been particularly reliable or fitness would have risen to levels comparable with the unfakeable condition. the hypotheses about sustainable bluffing discussed at the beginning of the chapter assume that a signalling system exists and that a level of deception can be maintained within it. because no proper signalling system evolved, these predictions are of debatable relevance. nevertheless, in terms of gardner and morris's 1989 ; model the simulation results suggest that the cost of bluffing was low. recall that gardner and morris argued that, given the high cost of injury, a low cost of bluffing would lead to a non-signalling equilibrium in which all competitors bluff, while a high cost of bluffing would lead to honest signalling. we can say that bluffing was probably cheap for the same reasons that we dismissed enquist's condition d v c: weak animals had time to 2 retreat if a bluff did not work, and could therefore avoid serious injury costs. adams and mesterton-gibbons's 1995 ; prediction, that the strongest animals would signal their strength and the weakest would attempt to bluff, was not borne out. if it had been, we would have expected to see in figure 8.8 that both the strongest and the very weakest animals started the contest with an aggressive first move, whereas animals of average ability were more neutral. indeed, the data on bluffing strongly support the conventional game-theoretic view maynard smith, 1982; krebs & dawkins, 1984 ; that participants in aggressive interactions will eventually come to pay little attention to each other's manipulative "signals". for example, in the cfa case figure 8.8 ; , the weakest animals start with an aggressive move about 25% of the time. these bluffs at least occasionally result in the animal gaining the resource see figure 8.10 ; , but to explain this we do not need to propose that the animal's opponent is paying any attention, because in the blind.
Demand for years. because of this strong demand and the relative ease of selling network television, its salespeople have become complacent, even lazy, and, as explained in chapter 8 of media selling, it has become a commodity. as i write in chapter 8, "a commodity is a product that is interchangeable with other products, widely available, and, therefore, differentiated only by price. because commodities are interchangeable with other products, meaning there are many substitutes, it is difficult to charge a higher price than other similar products charge not only is network television a commodity, it is also losing some of its panache. here is what i wrote in my web log blog ; on october 2, 2003: as i was doing research for the second chapter, titled "sales strategy, " of the sales management book, i ran across a couple of news stories that brought home to me that the business of media selling might have reached a tipping point. the first story was about mel karmizan lowering his forecasts for viacom due to the continued slowdown in local advertising revenue, as detailed in diane mermigas's column in television week. the second story, the tipping point, i believe, was in television week in a story titled "tv execs irked by late ad changes." the takeout headline was "this year it's very, very late. the new season has already started. there seems to be a lack of respect for how the rules work." what this unnamed senior cable ad sales executive was whining about was that some network upfront buyers were not fulfilling their commitments on upfront buys. for example, unilver cut back its upfront buy by 29 percent, it was reported. upfront buys are not orders but holds, which in the past have been as good as orders. it was considered a breech of faith not to make good on a hold. but for years networks screwed over buyers by overestimating ratings to keep prices up and then giving them less desirable fourth quarter make-goods. but, generally, there was a nice conspiracy going between networks and major buying agencies. it went something like this, "you pay me an increased cpm every year, while pretending to be outraged at the increase, and i'll guarantee your impressions and give you favorable positions." network television is profitable for an agency to buy. an agency negotiator can spend million in a couple of negotiating sessions, but to buy that much radio, it would take a media department a dozen people and take weeks; therefore, agencies want to buy network tv. but a majority of viewers have moved to cable and because cable has so much inventory in those 500 + channels, the prices cpms ; for cable are kept low. clearly, cable is a much better buy. smart buyers are beginning to break the conspiracy and are thinking about their clients for a change--to get more television for less money. buyers are saying to television sales departments to work harder and start delivering more value. both concepts are anathema to network television salespeople--they are lazy and arrogant. a friend of mine who has to deal with them says, "they are order-takers. they wait for the phone to ring." by canceling part of their upfront buys this year, some buyers have had the courage to say that the emperor has no clothes, and he wants to charge more for less and less. i believe that this might be a tipping point--a small event that will throw the light of reality on the value of network tv and the way it is bought and sold. i think cross-platform selling will start to take off soon as a result of some of this enlightenment. if you want to learn more about buying and planning television and all media, go to erwin ephron's marvelous website ephrononmedia ; . you might want to check out my blog, because i write about media sales and management issues on a regular basis. the url for the blog is : charleswarner spot . in the past, networks maximized revenue and got more than their fair share of total advertising revenue because of demand, not because of effective sales strategies. the primary sales strategies the television networks have used in the past are: 1. reinforcing the value of their medium 2. innovate 3. helping their competitors get rich.
