By david brunner treasurer, ayya hello everyone, i just wanted to write a little article on a bit of yoyo nostalgia. see, i currently run a yoyo club in florida which still has 50-60 players in attendance each week, even though the popularity is down all across the nation. well, my assistant is a man named rick osborne. rick used to be an old duncan and royal demonstrator in the years past. he has picked up quite a few old pieces of equipment and collectibles from the glorious years of the 40's and 50's. one of these is an old string machine that is 50 years old and was used at the royal yoyo factory ! of course, i asked him to bring it to yoyo club one night and lets try to make strings ! last friday, my club night, he brought the machine. it was on a long board, about 8 feet long. there is a motor on one end with a hook. on the other end of the board is a place for a spool of string, two exit holes, and a guide with a cutter on it. i asked rick, "how do you use this darn thing?", and he replied "i don't know, you figure it out !!". so with a little help from some players, we put the spool on the end, ran the string through the guide holes and down towards the hook on the motor at the other end. from there, you go around the hook and back towards the spool and cutter end. you just come through the cutter area and stop. then you press the big fat button on the side.bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.off it went. it spun the two threads together making some really nice type 8 strings. for those of you that don't know what type string you have, separate the two threads that make the loop that goes around the yoyo axle. now look at one side of that loop.you will see its made up of 3 individual threads. so, if you have 4 threads there, when you put it around the yoyo and it goes back up to your hand, you have type 8 string. if there were only 3 little threads there on one half, if would be type 6, and so on. anywho, we the used the cutter to slice the string from the rest of the spool and tied a regular finger knot at the end and took the other end off of the motor hook. and there you go.good old fashion yoyo string ! the spool of thread was original royal stock too !! well, this stuff, even though type 8, was really, really thin. it made strings such as slick 6 look like cable on string trick yoyos.this stuff was great ! however, it is thin, so looping with it wasn't a good idea! i then had the kids line up and each got to make his hers own yoyo string to take with them. i couldn't imagine making hundreds of these this way though! well, we had a really good time making yoyo string and learning some history to boot.hope everyone else gets to have a fun experience like i had one day and poker casino game.
