By reverend carol suraci community united church of christ the day of pentecost was the great feast of harvest or day of the first fruits for the israelites and comes fifty days after passover in the hebrew bible exod. 23: 16, num. 28: 26 ; . the first pentecost after jesus ascension was the coming of the holy spirit into the hearts and minds of his disciples and immediate followers. jesus had planted many spiritual seeds or ideas in the minds and hearts of his disciples and followers while they learned of him during his three years of ministry. he said, if i do not go the comforter will not come. it is written, he ascended into heaven. remember jesus words, the kingdom of heaven is neither low here or low there; the kingdom of heaven is within you. spring is a time of harvest. the breath of the almighty breathes through the plants and trees bringing forth new life in all its glory. let this spring time be a time of renewal of your heart and mind letting the breath of god breathe through you as you prepare the soil of your mind to receive the gift of the baptism of the holy spirit. as we pray and give thanks daily to god with a grateful heart we, too, like the disciples can open ourselves to the glory of god to be renewed and transformed in heart and mind by breath of god flowing through us as new life. we practice daily with an open mind and heart to turn our attention toward god within, breathing deeply and relaxing the mind from thought. it was said of the disciples that they appeared filled with new wine. the fruit of the vine was considered life. the fruit of the holy spirit is new exhilarating life flowing in and through us as we open our hearts and minds toward god waiting to receive. and there was great joy on the day of pentecost. they were filled with spiritual power to proclaim the truth of the salvation of god through christ they spoke with other tongues ; . if the spirit of him who raised jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised christ jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his spirit which dwells in you. rom. 7: 11.
